I have no friends: My mind is my friend.
I think this is absolutely fine. And truthful.
And it’s a matter of making good choices for ourselves.
Of course, we can’t cut ourselves off completely, and shouldn’t.
But enjoying the properties of our own minds is primary.
Lady Nyo
Seen from a Warrior and Buddhist/Zen perspective, what he is driving at by the statement:
“I have no friends: I make my mind my friend.”
Is that the mind is known in spirituality to be a mad-monkey. It is cyclic and often random and regurgitates thoughts just to keep the madness going round in circles. In this sense, the mind is one’s foremost enemy as long as one is a slave to it.
Mastery of the mind comes first, where it falls back into the role of a tool to be used when required… and in that, by Mastering it, the warrior makes his mind his friend.
